Interesting developments everywhere we turn

The second quarter has seen some interesting developments worth sharing. There has been great interest around Chinese automakers and their rate of vehicle development and OTA adoption, as discussed in a recent S&P article that features Mike Gardner, our Executive Director.We have also continued to further the conversation around OTA through our blogs. One of our most recent articles looks at the lack of uptake by automakers and examines the various issues surrounding why. We also look at the role of standardized OTA in gasoline-powered vehicles as well as EV and hybrid designs.

Welcoming Telechips to the Alliance

Telechips has joined the eSync Alliance as our newest member. Headquartered in South Korea, Telechips is a fabless automotive semiconductor company developing system-on-chip solutions for infotainment, digital cockpit, ADAS and in-vehicle networking applications, with its silicon deployed by automakers around the world.As vehicle architectures consolidate and more functions run on fewer, more capable processors, the ability to deliver secure, standardized OTA updates at the chip level becomes ever more important. Telechips’ membership strengthens the Alliance’s semiconductor ecosystem and brings valuable perspective from one of the industry’s most dynamic regions.We look forward to working with the Telechips team and will share more on their contribution to the Alliance in future updates.

OTA Mike Gardner comments on the topic of ‘China Speed’

This quarter, S&P Global Mobility interviewed Mike Gardner, Executive Director of the Alliance, for a feature titled “Closing the Gap: What China Speed Really Means for Western OEMs.” The article examines how Chinese OEMs are outpacing Western manufacturers on software-defined vehicle development, and how standardized OTA and common software frameworks can help close that gap.Newer Chinese brands have been able to adopt standardization with fewer constraints than Western OEMs, many of whom are held back by legacy architecture or team structures. This is illustrated by the fact that eSync-based OTA has been deployed in production Chinese vehicles since 2019, when FAW became one of the first OEMs in the world to bring an eSync-enabled connected vehicle to market.The piece also explores how standardized OTA infrastructure allows OEMs to accelerate development and deployment cycles, delivering updates post-production rather than requiring full feature completeness before launch. Gardner also shared his perspective on how he expects software-driven development to evolve over the next three to five years. Read the full piece here.
Why is the automotive sector still getting OTA wrong?

Many OEMs and Tier 1s built proprietary OTA systems in the early stages of the connected vehicle movement. This has created challenges for suppliers, who often have to support significantly different OTA protocols across customers, driving fragmentation across the sector.Security compounds the issue. Proprietary OTA systems place the burden of monitoring vulnerabilities and responding to emerging threats on a single organization – a significant, ongoing commitment of resources that most aren’t structured to sustain.These are the exact challenges the eSync Alliance specifications were created to address. By standardizing OTA interfaces, security infrastructure and a compliance-ready architecture, that fragmentation and duplicated effort can be reversed.
